The Medal “Winterschlacht im Osten 1941/42” (Medal for the Winter Struggle in the East 1941/42) was an award from Nazi Germany that was awarded to German soldiers who had taken part in the campaign against the Soviet Union during the winter of 1941-1942.
The medal was instituted by Adolf Hitler on May 26, 1942 and was awarded to soldiers of the German Wehrmacht, including the Heer, Kriegsmarine and Luftwaffe, who qualified for their participation in the operations in the Eastern Front during the harsh winter months between November 15 1941 and April 15, 1942.
To be eligible for the medal, soldiers had to:
– Have fought on the Eastern Front for at least 14 days,
– Being involved in a battle with the enemy,
– Have suffered an injury,
– Have suffered serious injuries due to frostbite,
– Participated in the winter offensive of 1941/42 on the Eastern Front.
