The Iron Cross 1939, 2nd Class, was awarded in recognition of gallant and meritorious service in the German Army. It was awarded to soldiers for exceptional achievements on the battlefield, such as courage, leadership or loyal service. It was seen as one of the most important awards within the German military decoration system.

The Ostmedaille, also known as the Medaille “Winterschlacht im Osten 1941/42” (Medal for the Winter War in the East 1941/42), was a German decoration instituted on May 26, 1942 during the Second World War. The medal was awarded to soldiers who had taken part in the campaigns in the east, during the operations against the Soviet Union.
