The Deutsches Schutzwall-Ehrenzeichen was awarded to both soldiers and civilians who had contributed to the construction and reinforcement of the Siegfried Line (Westwall) and other fortifications. It was a source of national pride and was used for propaganda purposes to honor and celebrate the efforts of those who worked on the defense line.
